A local urban explorer has documented the remains of Arklow’s former KFC, with signs of the restaurant still visible inside the long-abandoned building.
Almost seven years after Arklow’s former KFC closed its doors in 2019, a video posted in May earlier this year has offered a glimpse inside the abandoned restaurant and the remains of what was once a familiar fast-food spot in the town.
A local YouTuber, posting under the name Urban Shadows, explored the building which closed in October 2019 and has remained unused since and documented what remains inside, including parts of the former dining area, kitchen and back-of-house facilities.
Despite years of abandonment and extensive vandalism, a number of features from the building’s time as a KFC remain. The video shows seating still fixed to the floor in the former dining area, along with parts of the bathrooms, doors, fixtures and other fittings.
Moving into the back-of-house areas, the explorer discovers sinks, large freezer units, cupboards and various pieces of electrical and data infrastructure. Some of the equipment has been stripped or damaged over the years, with wires visible in several areas.
There is also evidence that the building has been repeatedly entered since its closure, with graffiti, discarded cans and other rubbish visible throughout the property. The video also raises the question of what could eventually happen to the vacant property, with the explorer noting its prominent location and questioning why it has remained unused for so long.
