Free music lessons for over-55s in Wicklow opens for applications

Wicklow County Council and Music Network are inviting County Wicklow residents aged 55 and over to take part in a music residency, with free lessons from professional musicians. Applications close at 2pm on Tuesday 27th October 2026.

Called Making Music in Wicklow, the residency is aimed at people who used to play an instrument and want to get back to it. Tuition will be given by the Sundew Trio, with Rachael Masterson on violin, Rachel Duffy on harp and Susan Doyle on flute. Instruments will be available to participants throughout.

The programme runs from November 2026 to March 2027. Each participant will receive eight individual lessons and three group lessons with others playing the same instrument. It will finish with three large ensemble sessions, where participants play alongside the professional musicians. There will also be coffee sessions and discussions on musical topics.

Applicants must be 55 or older, live in County Wicklow and have some experience playing violin, harp or flute. Reading music is helpful but not required. Sessions will be held at Wicklow County Campus, Clermont House, Rathnew. Places are limited to 15 and will be given on a first come, first served basis. Participants must be available for all project dates, which are listed, along with the application form, on the Music Network website, musicnetwork.ie.
