David Attenborough mural replaced at Arklow Skate Park

A much-loved David Attenborough mural at Arklow Skate Park has been painted over as the artwork at the popular street art site continues to evolve.

The mural, which featured the renowned broadcaster and naturalist, had become a familiar part of the Skate Park and attracted plenty of attention locally.

However, rather than viewing the change negatively, the artist behind the original mural says it is part of what makes the annual street art event special.

The mural was created as part of the summer street art event at the Skate Park which brings together local artists and artists from elsewhere in Ireland.

Speaking to Arklow News, the original artist ‘Kayde‘ said he was naturally disappointed to see the Attenborough artwork disappear, but believes the space should continue to allow artists to express themselves.

“As sad as I was to see the David Attenborough mural painted over, I think it’s important that we have the space for artists to express themselves.”

The original David Attenborough mural has now been replaced

He said the event provides an opportunity for artists to create something that can give local people a sense of pride in their town.

“It gives a deep pride of place for locals – the same way the Attenborough mural did.”

Rather than seeing the latest artwork as an end to the previous mural, Kayde believes the changing artwork is part of the appeal of street art.

“It’s the nature of the medium, and it brings excitement to see what might come next.”

The Skate Park has hosted the annual event each summer, with artists coming together to transform the surrounding spaces with new work.

While the Attenborough mural is now gone, the response from its original creator suggests that the changing artwork is very much part of the intention.
