Arklow Ranked Best Town in Ireland for Work-Life Balance

Arklow has been named the top town in Ireland for work-life balance in a new nationwide study examining the best places to live and work.
The research, carried out by Switcher.ie, assessed towns and cities across the country using a broad range of criteria. These included access to essential amenities such as primary schools, supermarkets and leisure facilities, along with broadband and mobile coverage, crime rates, property affordability, green spaces and transport connections.
Arklow secured the number one position in the Work Life Balance Index thanks to a combination of comparatively affordable housing, strong local services and reliable connectivity. All of these factors are increasingly important for people working remotely or in hybrid roles. The town’s coastal setting and access to outdoor spaces also contributed to its high ranking.
Following closely behind Arklow in the overall standings were Ballina in Mayo, Enniscorthy in Wexford, Wicklow town and Cork city.
The study used median house price figures from October 2025, based on the Residential Property Price Index, to compare affordability. Ballina was identified as the most affordable location among the towns surveyed when it came to buying a home.
Elsewhere in the rankings, Galway was highlighted as the best place for outdoor living and fitness opportunities. Dublin, Cork and Kildare town performed strongly in terms of broadband and mobile services, while Cork, Galway, Dublin and Sligo were noted for their transport links.
Commenting on the findings, Switcher.ie’s Commercial Director Eoin Clarke said that;
“While house prices remain a key consideration for buyers, other factors now play a major role in determining overall quality of life.”
“Reliable broadband and mobile coverage, nearby amenities and access to green areas can make a significant difference for those balancing careers with family life or other commitments.”
The research points to a growing trend in which professionals and families are looking beyond major urban centres in favour of towns that offer a blend of affordability, connectivity and lifestyle with Arklow now leading the way nationally.
