Arklow’s own Alan J. Duffy, son of Donal and Teresa Duffy from Mountain Bay, has achieved international acclaim as Principal Architect at Architectus. On Saturday, June 29, 2025, Duffy’s Flinders University Health and Medical Research Building (HMRB) in Adelaide, South Australia, was honoured with the prestigious State Medal, the highest architectural accolade, alongside three additional awards, including a sustainability award, at a ceremony celebrating excellence in design.

The jury commented, “The design team have successfully fused sustainable principles, collaboration and culture to enhance well-being, with HMRB setting precedent for educational design as holistic architecture. It is the essence of how architecture is used to foster the well-being of its occupants and connect with culture that makes this project exemplary.”

Duffy’s journey to this remarkable achievement began in 1991 when, as a student at St. Kevin’s CBS, he won an all-Ireland gold medal for art, a milestone that fuelled his creativity. Later named ‘Arklow Person of the Year,’
