The newly inaugurated €139 million Arklow wastewater treatment plant has captured international attention, with The Guardian lauding it as a “Cathedral of Crap”—a playful nod to its remarkable architectural design. Designed by Dublin-based Clancy Moore Architects, the facility is praised for transforming essential infrastructure into an architectural landmark.
For decades, Arklow faced environmental challenges due to the discharge of untreated waste into the River Avoca, adversely affecting local beaches and hindering the town’s growth.
