Wicklow County Council has announced that St. Peter’s Place Playground in Arklow will be closed for refurbishment starting Monday, August 11th, with works expected to take approximately four weeks to complete.

The project, coordinated by Arklow Municipal District and the Arklow Town Team, aims to modernise the playground and enhance its accessibility and safety for children of all ages and abilities.

While the refurbishment is ongoing, nearby playgrounds at Seaview Avenue and South Green will remain open to the public.

The works will include power washing all wet pour areas and tarmac, installing new wet pour edging, replacing sections of old tarmac, and rearranging existing equipment to allow for new pieces to be installed. The upgrade will also see the addition of a large-scale play structure and inclusive play elements to ensure a more user-friendly experience for all children.

These improvements are funded through the Community Recognition Fund and follow continued engagement with local residents and community organisations.

Local Councillor Peir Leonard welcomed the project, saying she was glad to see it begin and thanked Allison Ryder and the District Administrator for their work as part of the Arklow Town Team. She added that the need for investment in the playground was also highlighted by local residents and young people involved in The Vault Youth Centre under the leadership of Angela Pluck. Leonard also thanked everyone involved in securing the funding for the works.

In a separate update, Cllr Leonard confirmed she has submitted requests to the Municipal District seeking investment in the upgrade of footpaths in the surrounding estates.

Wicklow County Council and Arklow Town Team have thanked the public for their patience and understanding during the works and reiterated that the outcome will be a greatly improved community facility for local families.
