Sale of former Eircom building set to boost commercial activity

The long-vacant former Eircom building on Emoclew Road may finally be set for redevelopment, according to local TD Brian Brennan, who met with the site’s new owner this week following unexpected activity at the premises.

Brennan said he was contacted by “a number of constituents” after movement was spotted on the site for the first time in years. In response, he arranged a meeting on Thursday afternoon to seek clarity on what may be planned.

According to Brennan, the new owner “clearly outlined his vision for this site,” explaining that subject to planning permission he hopes to open “a number of commercial units” on the property.

The TD also contacted the auctioneer responsible for the sale, who “reaffirmed the new owner’s intention,” and undertook his own checks on the developer’s background. “He has a proven track record in bringing an old site to life by setting up commercial businesses,” Brennan said.

The owner has committed to sharing drawings with Brennan once they are completed. While no formal planning application has yet been submitted, the TD said he is encouraged by the early indications.

“I feel that, subject to planning, the new owner’s plans to bring this site back to life will be hugely positive for Arklow and will also provide much-appreciated local employment,” Brennan said.

He added that he will continue to monitor developments and keep the public updated as the project progresses.
