Pet owners in Arklow and beyond now have access to a unique and heartfelt veterinary service dedicated to providing palliative, hospice, and end-of-life care for their beloved animals. Rainbow Bridge Veterinary Services, founded by Dr. Megan Anderson, is Ireland’s first mobile veterinary practice focused exclusively on ensuring comfort, dignity, and quality of life for pets in their final stages.

A Vision Born from Experience

Dr. Megan Anderson, a highly qualified veterinary surgeon with a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice, has always been passionate about animal care. Her journey began at the young age of five, and her dedication to veterinary medicine led her to work across small animal and exotic practices before qualifying from UCD in 2015.

After years of mixed practice and then serving as a Clinical Director of a small animal hospital, she identified a major gap in Irish veterinary services—specialized palliative and end-of-life care for pets.

Megan’s inspiration for launching Rainbow Bridge Veterinary Services was deeply personal. In late 2023, she welcomed Pip, a 15-year-old diabetic dog with multiple health issues, into her home. Expected to live only a few weeks, Pip thrived under a palliative care approach, proving that age and illness don’t have to mean the end of a pet’s quality of life. This experience reaffirmed Megan’s belief that with the right care, pets can enjoy their final months or even years in comfort.

A Unique Approach to Veterinary Care

Unlike traditional veterinary clinics, Rainbow Bridge Veterinary Services operates as a mobile, home-based practice, ensuring pets receive treatment in a stress-free environment. Dr. Anderson works closely and collaboratively with pet owners to create customized palliative care plans, helping manage pain, discomfort, and symptoms in the most compassionate way possible.

Why Palliative and Hospice Care Matters

As veterinary medicine advances, more once-fatal conditions have become treatable. However, aggressive treatments and frequent hospital visits are not always in the best interest of every pet. Some animals struggle with vet visits, others may have multiple conditions making invasive procedures unrealistic.

Megan’s philosophy is simple:

“Just because we can, doesn’t always mean we should.”

When the time left is limited, the most important thing is how a pet feels, and the focus shifts from trying to cure their ailments to making sure they are as happy and comfortable as possible – quality over quantity as they say.

But providing this care can be tricky, especially when it means frequent trips to and from vet clinics, and just 15 minutes in a consult room to try and address all of a pet’s issues.

Rainbow Bridge Veterinary Services aims to ‘bridge’ this gap, ensuring that pets spend their final months in comfort, surrounded by their families. This means longer consultations, virtual follow-ups, and home visits where pets can be treated in familiar surroundings, free from the anxiety of a clinical setting.

A collaborative approach means clients are included in every step of the decision-making process to ensure their pet’s care plan is tailored to not only maximise their pet’s quality of life but also recognise the time and energy required of the people caring for them.

Supporting Pet Owners Through Difficult Decisions

One of the hardest aspects of pet ownership is making end-of-life decisions. Rainbow Bridge Veterinary Services provides not only medical care but also emotional support to pet owners during these difficult times.

The service ensures that families receive the guidance and support they need during this process and that when the moment comes to say goodbye, pets can pass peacefully in their favourite place, with their loved ones by their side.

A New Era of Pet Care in Ireland

By launching Rainbow Bridge Veterinary Services, Dr Megan Anderson has brought a much-needed compassionate approach to veterinary medicine. For pet owners seeking gentle, dignified, and fear-free care for their senior or terminally ill animals, this new service is a beacon of hope and comfort.
