Arklow To Shillelagh Greenway Given €500k Boost

The Arklow to Shillelagh Greenway has been given a boost with the allocation of €500,000 to progress the project to the next stage.
The Greenway will begin in Arklow and pass through Woodenbridge, Aughrim, Tinahely, and finally on to Shillelagh spanning a total of 35 km.
The idea of the Arklow to Shillelagh Greenway is to develop a new walking and cycling amenity, building on the success of the Tinahely Railway Walk and other attractions, and extending that idea to connect the towns, villages, and communities along the way.
The Greenway will provide a high quality off-road amenity for walking and recreational cycling that would have immediate local appeal, but with sufficient scale would also attract visitors from afar to bring a wider economic benefit to the area.
Announcing the Greenway Allocations, Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien said:
“I am pleased to announce €67 million of this investment, which will help deliver key greenway projects all over the country.
Minister of State Seán Canney said:
“Greenways are safe and accessible transport corridors that encourage greater levels of travel by cycling and walking, rather than by private cars, for leisure users, tourists and commuters.”
“The continued expansion of our walking and cycling network through Greenway and active travel infrastructure on our national roads is crucial in offering safe travel options to cyclists and pedestrians. It also contributes to our progress towards Vision Zero, our road safety strategy which sets out to achieve zero road fatalities or serious injuries by 2050.”
