Arklow Running Track Grant Welcomed — But ‘Not Enough’

There was positive news for the Arklow running track today with the announcement of a grant to improve the facility. A total of €49,700 has been awarded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media for improvements to the facility. This is subject to the terms of the Sports Capital Programme.
The works will be remedial to the existing track, including cleaning the surface. Arklow Municipal District intends to proceed with the successful contractor within the next two to three months, considering their existing workload.
AMD and their Sports Partnership colleagues will continue to apply for funding as the funding streams become available.
Following the announcement, local Arklow Counsellor Peir Leonard said;
“While this latest news is welcomed, it is not what we need. We need to see proper investment in the town’s facilities. I will be asking for an exact breakdown on what this money will be spent on.”
Separate works were completed late last year, with newly installed lights providing much-needed safety and visibility for those using the track.
