Arklow Mourns the Passing of Beloved Eight-Year-Old Matthew

The Arklow and Rathnew communities have been left heartbroken following the tragic passing of eight-year-old Matthew Breen, who died on Monday, 17th November, surrounded by his family in Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

Matthew, described by relatives as “the most loving little boy” and “our hero”, was a pupil deeply cherished by classmates, neighbours, and friends in both Arklow and Wicklow. His loss has prompted an outpouring of grief and support across the region.

A GoFundMe page, set up by Matthew’s relatives to support the family during this devastating time, has already raised over €12,000. In the fundraiser, Lauren explains that Matthew had suffered a broken arm earlier in the week and was due to undergo surgery. She recounts the family’s experience in the days that followed, writing that Matthew became unwell while in hospital and later deteriorated at home before being rushed back to Crumlin. Matthew was placed on life support but heartbreakingly passed away on Monday.

The GoFundMe page emphasises the profound love felt for Matthew:

“He was the most heart-warming boy and will be missed and loved by all who knew him.”

Matthew’s relatives also expressed deep appreciation for the community, saying that any contribution, no matter how small, would help the family through this unimaginable time.

Matthew’s death notice on RIP.ie speaks of the immense love surrounding him. He is remembered as the precious son of Ciara, Callum and Eden, and a devoted big brother to Tyler, Olivia, Amelia and Oliver. He is also mourned by his nanny Anne (née Murphy), great-grandparents Jimmy and Bridgid Murphy, extended family, relatives, friends, and a wide circle of neighbours and classmates.

“Matthew will be loved and remembered always,” the tribute reads.
