Arklow Men Raise Nearly €6,000 in ‘Freezbrury’ Challenge for Cancer Support

A group of Arklow men have once again braved the icy waters of February in support of a vital local charity and this year they have surpassed their fundraising target.
The now-annual “Freezbrury” Challenge saw the group complete 28 consecutive days of cold-water dips throughout February, building up their time in the sea with each passing day. By the end of the month, they had accumulated an impressive 406 minutes immersed in freezing conditions.
On the final morning, supporters gathered to cheer them on as they completed a 28-minute dip to mark Day 28 of the challenge.
Posting afterwards, the group thanked the community for their backing.
“Day 28 of Freezbrury Complete. 28 minutes. 406 minutes done in cold water for the month of Feb. Big thanks to everyone for coming down this morning, it was great craic.”
“Thanks to everyone who donated, we have passed the €5,000 marker this morning. This money will be a big help to Arklow Cancer Support and help them with the great work they do.”
Last years total tipped over the €6,000 mark while this year, the men have raised €5,990 for Arklow Cancer Support, exceeding their original €5,000 goal. Donations are still being accepted, with the total expected to rise further.
The challenge is simple in concept but tough in execution. Starting with just one minute in the water on February 1st, participants add an extra minute each day, finishing with 28 minutes on the final day of the month. The cumulative total results in over six hours spent in icy water.
The rules are strict. Shorts only, no hats or gloves, submerged to at least waist height and including at least one full head dunk per session.
This marks the third consecutive year the group has taken on the Freezbrury Challenge in aid of Arklow Cancer Support, a volunteer-led organisation that provides practical and emotional assistance to individuals and families affected by cancer in the local community.
Funds raised will help support services such as counselling, transport to hospital appointments, and one-to-one support during treatment and recovery.
While the freezing temperatures test physical endurance, the men say the real motivation comes from knowing the funds raised will directly benefit people in their own town.
Anyone wishing to contribute can still donate through their iDonate fundraising page, with every euro going directly towards supporting cancer patients and their families in Arklow.
