Arklow Teacher Faces Urgent Third Open-Heart Surgery as Fundraiser Launched

Eímear Byrne

A young teacher from Arklow is facing a race against time after being told she requires urgent open-heart surgery in the United States, prompting a major fundraising effort by family, friends and the local community.

Eímear Byrne, aged 30, works as a primary school teacher and is described by those close to her as someone who is deeply passionate about helping children learn and grow. However, she is now preparing for her third open-heart surgery following the discovery of multiple aneurysms.

Her sister, Níamh Byrne, has launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the significant costs associated with the specialist procedure, which must be carried out abroad due to the complexity of Eímear’s condition.

Eímear has been living with a rare connective tissue disorder since childhood. At just 10 years of age, she underwent her first open-heart surgery, an experience that marked the beginning of a lifelong battle with her health.

That battle intensified three years ago when she suffered a ruptured aneurysm, leading to emergency surgery that ultimately saved her life. However, the procedure was not without serious complications, as Eímear suffered a severe stroke during the operation.

Her recovery was long and challenging, requiring her to relearn basic daily tasks including walking and speaking. Despite this, she showed remarkable determination, eventually returning to the classroom and the career she loves.

Now, following the recent discovery of three additional aneurysms, Eímear is once again facing a critical medical situation. Due to the risks involved, her next surgery must take place in a specialised hospital in the United States, where experts have the experience and facilities required to carry out the complex procedure.

The cost of the operation and subsequent rehabilitation is expected to be substantial, placing a significant financial burden on the family.

In response, Níamh has organised a number of fundraising efforts, including a skydive, with both sisters’ schools also getting involved under the banner “2 sisters, 2 schools and 1 goal” in a bid to raise vital funds.

The campaign is now gaining momentum locally, with the community being asked to support in any way possible, whether through donations or by sharing Eímear’s story.

Those behind the fundraiser say every contribution will go towards giving Eímear the best possible chance of recovery and a return to the life she has worked so hard to rebuild.

A total of over €88,000 has been raised so far and donations can be made through the GoFundMe page.
