Joan Delany Wife of Olympic Legend Ronnie Delany Passes Away Days After Him

Joan Delany, beloved wife of Olympic gold medallist Ronnie Delany, has sadly passed away just days after her husband.
Joan formerly of Dundrum and later Carrickmines, died peacefully on March 18th, surrounded by her devoted family and in the care of staff at Blackrock Clinic.
Her passing comes only a short time after the death of Ronnie Delany, one of Ireland’s greatest sporting figures and a proud son of Arklow, adding a deep sense of sadness to what has already been a difficult period for many.
In a touching tribute, Joan was described as the “beloved and deeply cherished wife of the late Ronnie, so recently departed, and now reunited once more in gentle peace.”
A devoted mother, she will be sadly missed by her children Lisa, Ronnie, Jennie and Michelle, her adored grandchildren and great-granddaughter, as well as her extended family and wide circle of friends.
Those who knew Joan have remembered her as a kind and graceful woman, known for her warmth, quiet strength and enduring presence in the lives of those around her.
The close timing of both passings has resonated deeply, with many reflecting on a lifelong partnership now reunited.
Ronnie Delany’s name will forever be etched in Irish sporting history following his unforgettable gold medal victory in the 1,500 metres at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. His legacy continues to be celebrated in Arklow, where a statue stands in his honour at Ferrybank.
Now, as the town continues to reflect on his extraordinary life and achievements, there is also a shared sense of sympathy for the Delany family following Joan’s passing.
Funeral arrangements will see Joan repose at Massey Bros. Funeral Home in Blackrock on Friday evening, with removal on Saturday morning to St. Brigid’s Church, Cabinteely, for an 11am Requiem Mass, followed by a private cremation service.
Together in life for many years, Ronnie and Joan Delany are now, as many have noted, reunited once more.
