Councillors Demand Emergency Funding for Storm-Ravaged Wicklow Roads

At the plenary meeting of Wicklow County Council on Monday, March 2nd, councillors voiced serious concerns over the widespread damage to roads across the county following Storm Chandra, with urgent calls for emergency funding from Government.
Elected members agreed to suspend standing orders to address what several described as a rapidly escalating infrastructure crisis. The proposal, led by Cllr Avril Cronin and supported across the chamber by councillors including Gerry O’Neill, Patsy Glennon, Pat Mahon, Jason Mulhall, Peter Stapleton and Joe Behan, calls on the Council to formally write to the Department of Transport, the Office of the Taoiseach, Wicklow TDs and Senators seeking immediate financial assistance.
In the motion adopted unanimously, councillors highlighted the scale of the repair bill now facing the county. The estimated cost of restoring damaged roads in the Baltinglass Municipal District alone stands at €5 million, while the projected total for County Wicklow has reached €15.6 million.
While damage has been reported countywide, the impact of Storm Chandra has been keenly felt in Arklow and surrounding areas.
The storm, which brought days of intense rainfall, high winds and surface flooding, left many local roads scarred with potholes, subsidence and crumbling verges. In parts of the town and along key commuter routes, standing water and debris created hazardous driving conditions, particularly in the immediate aftermath.
For local businesses, the disruption has been more than an inconvenience. Delivery delays, reduced footfall during severe weather warnings and concerns over customer access have compounded what is already a challenging trading environment for town centre retailers.
Some business owners have expressed frustration at the speed with which road surfaces deteriorated following the storm, particularly on routes leading into Arklow from surrounding rural areas.
Commuters travelling to and from Arklow for work have also reported increased journey times due to damaged stretches of road and precautionary driving on affected routes.
