The popular Arklow Junior parkrun returns this Sunday morning at the Duckpond but organisers say the future of the weekly event depends on more local volunteers stepping forward.

Taking place every Sunday at 9.30am, the junior parkrun is a free, timed 2km event designed for children aged 4 to 14. The event has become a much-loved fixture in the community, encouraging young people to get active, build confidence and enjoy the outdoors in a safe and supportive environment.

However, like all parkrun events, it relies entirely on volunteers.

Organisers are now appealing for additional helpers to ensure the weekly event can continue to operate safely and smoothly.

“We are looking for more volunteers to help us keep the junior parkrun going,” a spokesperson said.

One of the most important roles on the morning is that of course marshal, a position organisers say is simple, enjoyable and hugely rewarding.

“Volunteering as a marshal is easy, you just have to wear a hi-vis vest, give encouragement and ensure the children navigate the course safely.”

Marshals play a vital role in creating the warm and welcoming atmosphere that has become synonymous with junior parkrun events across the country. Beyond ensuring safety along the route, volunteers cheer on participants, celebrate milestones and help make Sunday mornings something families look forward to.

Organisers also emphasise the wider personal benefits of volunteering.

“You get to be part of a community, meet new people, it’s good for your physical and mental health, and will help give you a sense of purpose.”

The event is part of the wider parkrun movement, which promotes free, weekly, timed runs in communities around the world. Junior parkrun events are specifically tailored to younger runners, focusing on fun, participation and building healthy habits from an early age.

At the Arklow Duckpond, the 2km course provides a scenic and safe setting for children to run, jog or walk at their own pace, with each participant receiving a timed result.

But without enough volunteers each week, organisers say the event simply cannot go ahead.
