Arklow Mourns the Passing of Local Sports Legend Jim Moore

The Arklow community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected and influential sports figures following the passing of Jim Moore, founder member and long-time head coach of Arklow Boxing Club.
Jim, who passed away peacefully at St Vincent’s Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in Irish sport, particularly in boxing, but also across the wider Arklow sporting community.
A true pioneer, Jim founded Arklow Boxing Club alongside Mick Morgan fifty years ago, helping to create a space where young people could learn discipline, confidence, and respect through sport. Over the decades, he served as Head Coach, Club Chairman, and County Board Chairman, guiding countless local boxers to success and shaping the development of the sport in Wicklow and beyond.
Jim’s contribution to Irish boxing reached national and international levels. For seven years, he worked with Ireland’s newly formed High Performance Unit alongside Billy Walsh, Zaur Antia, and Gary Keegan. His travels across Europe helped him gather ideas and practices that became part of a system envied by other nations.
Even while Jim was away, the club was kept going by Jackie Manley, Pat Mythen, and Martin Wolohan, until his return, when he picked up where he left off, coaching with his trademark dedication and enthusiasm.
Jim travelled widely with Irish teams and was immensely proud when his son James won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Belfast before embarking on a successful professional boxing career in New York. His daughter Linda continues the family’s close connection to the club, serving as secretary and coach, while his late son Paul and sons Owen and James have all been key figures in Arklow’s sporting scene.
Arklow Boxing Club described Jim’s passing as “the end of an era”, saying his funeral is sure to draw many who were coached or inspired by him over the years.
In a heartfelt message, one club member wrote:
“I myself was proud to be Jim’s sidekick all those years and will miss him dearly.”
Jim’s influence extended far beyond boxing. Arklow Town FC also paid tribute to him, reflecting on the Moore family’s long and proud association with the football club.
“Arklow Town Football Club sends our deepest condolences to the family of Jim Moore. Jim’s family are steeped in ATFC history with his sons Owen (ex-chairman of ATFC), James, and Paul (RIP), and daughter Linda all representing our club with distinction. Only a few weeks ago Jim could be seen in Lamberton cheering on his grandkids in their matches, and they will continue the Moore legacy playing for Arklow Town FC.”
The club also extended condolences to their friends at Arklow Boxing Club on Jim’s passing.
Jim Moore’s life was dedicated to sport, community, and family. His legacy will live on through the generations he coached, the family he inspired, and the clubs he helped to build.
Deepest sympathies are extended to his wife, Mary, sons Owen and James, daughter Linda, and the extended Moore family.
