Arklow’s under-16 girls cemented their dominance this season by claiming a remarkable treble, adding the Leinster U16 Cup to their already impressive haul of the South-East League and Leinster Premier League titles.

From the outset, Arklow showcased their attacking class, converting front-foot ball into scoreboard pressure with ruthless efficiency. Out-half Sophia White orchestrated the game with poise and power, and her tactical control and physical presence were instrumental in setting the tone.

It didn’t take long for the scoreboard to reflect their momentum. A slick passage of backline play opened up space for winger Ruby Treacy, who powered through a one-on-one challenge to score in just the sixth minute. Momentum remained firmly with Arklow, and centre Pearl Tyner soon dotted down for their second try, with White adding the extras.

White’s influence only grew as the game progressed. The playmaker carved through Athy’s defensive line from 20 metres out for her first try, which she coolly converted. Showing game awareness beyond her years, White opted to kick a penalty shortly after, stretching the lead to 20-0 — a move that demonstrated Arklow’s composure under pressure.

Athy, however, showed flashes of threat and resilience. They capitalised on clean lineout ball and fast recycling to create a scoring opportunity for centre Isabel Murphy, who crossed on the left wing just before the break, narrowing the gap to 20-5.

Determined not to let the game slip, Arklow came out firing in the second half. A surging forward drive led to hooker Emma Gannon powering over for another try, converted once again by the faultless White.

White’s influence didn’t stop there. Her well-placed kick was chased down by Georgia Horan and Shyne Leonard, resulting in White grabbing her second try from close range. With the conversion nailed, Arklow stretched their lead to 34-5 by the 43rd minute.

To their credit, Athy continued to fight. Centre Eabha Flynn delivered a standout solo effort, evading multiple tacklers to touch down for a stunning try. Catherine Murphy then made a strong carry before delivering an improvised offload to scrum-half Kate Lawlor, who finished smartly.

In the closing stages, full-back Lucy Whelan made a dynamic break up the left, sparking a phase that ended with Billy Cullen scoring in the opposite corner. It was a spirited finale from Athy, who refused to go quietly despite the deficit.

In the end, Arklow’s blend of discipline, attacking flair, and tactical maturity proved too much, sealing a memorable season with an emphatic cup final victory. Credit to Leinster Rugby for the match report.
