In a dramatic showdown under glorious sunshine, Arklow U16 Girls claimed the Leinster League Premier Division title, edging Portlaoise 25-24 in a pulsating encounter that had spectators on the edge of their seats until the very last whistle.

Having already bested Portlaoise in the Leinster Cup semi-final two weeks ago, Arklow entered Saturday’s final full of belief and determination. However, their worthy opponents were equally determined in a game that continuously swung back and forth.

Early Exchanges Set the Tone

Portlaoise drew first blood seven minutes in, capitalising on a well-worked overlap to touch down in the right corner. The conversion drifted wide, but they had established an early lead.

Arklow’s response was swift and clinical. At 14 minutes, a strong scrum platform inside the Portlaoise 22 allowed Olivia Burke to break through the defensive line. After successive powerful drives from Ellie McCann and Pearl Tyner, the latter crashed over beneath the posts. Sophia White added the extras to put Arklow ahead 7-5.

Shortly before halftime, Arklow struck again. A sequence of quick hands and direct running saw Zoe Byrne, Sophia Whyte, and Burke make vital yards. A surging run from Laragh O’Callaghan Royo advanced play into the opposition 22 before Emma Gannon and Burke combined to maintain momentum. A pinpoint skip pass from White found winger Shyne Leonard, who finished expertly in the corner. The conversion was missed, but Arklow took a 12-5 advantage into the break.

Tactical Brilliance and Grit in the Second Half

Portlaoise started the second half with renewed purpose, abandoning the boot in favour of ball-in-hand rugby, wary of Arklow fullback Georgia Horan’s excellent positional play and fielding. However, it was Arklow who struck next. Intense defensive pressure led to a penalty at the breakdown, and White coolly slotted a 30-yard effort to make it 15-5.

Portlaoise quickly narrowed the gap, sending their winger over in the corner following sustained pressure. But Arklow hit back immediately. From the restart, they regained possession and after a powerful carry by Alannah Kulenovic, the ball was spun wide to Leonard, who dotted down for her second try. White was again on target with the conversion, extending Arklow’s lead to 22-10.

A Nail-Biting Finale

With time ticking away, Portlaoise mounted a spirited comeback. A yellow card to Tyner on 49 minutes handed momentum to the Laois side, who capitalised with a converted try under the posts. They struck again minutes later, exploiting a midfield knock-on to launch a devastating counterattack that ended with a 50-metre solo try. The conversion nudged Portlaoise into a 24-22 lead — their first since the opening stages.

But Arklow refused to panic. A fumble from Portlaoise on the restart gave Arklow an opening, and when Zoe Byrne got over the ball to win a penalty for holding on, Sophia White stepped up under immense pressure to slot what would prove to be the match-winning kick.

With just minutes remaining, Portlaoise launched one final assault. As they crossed the line, victory looked to be slipping from Arklow’s grasp, but Katelyn Laurie produced a sensational last-ditch effort to get under the ball and deny the grounding. A match-saving intervention that sparked jubilation as the referee signalled full-time.

Next Challenges Await

This remarkable win sees Arklow crowned Leinster League Premier Division Champions. A testament to their skill, resilience, and teamwork throughout the season. But their campaign isn’t over yet. They will now turn their focus to the Southeast Final against Wexford on April 19th before heading to Energia Park on May 3rd to face Athy in the Leinster Cup Final.
