Arklow’s own sporting legend, Ronnie Delany, is celebrating his 90th birthday today, marking a remarkable milestone in the life of one of Ireland’s greatest athletes.

Born in Arklow in 1935, Delany etched his name into the history books when he won gold in the 1,500 meters at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. His victory not only secured Ireland’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics since 1932 but also cemented his status as one of the country’s most iconic sports figures.

Even decades after his triumph, Delany remains a revered figure in Irish sport. His achievements inspired generations of athletes, and his dedication to promoting athletics continues to this day. Over the years, he has been honored with numerous awards, including being inducted into the Irish Athletics Hall of Fame.

The bronze Ronnie Delany statue was unveiled in Arklow in 2021 and sits proudly beside the Ferrybank roundabout. As he celebrates his 90th birthday, his legacy lives on, not just in his Olympic glory but in the inspiration he provides to young athletes aspiring to follow in his footsteps.
