Wicklow Braced For Storm Éowyn

A status red warning has been issued for Wicklow as storm Éowyn is expected to hit the country in the next 24 hours.
Met Éireann have indicated that there will be gale to storm force southwest to west winds which will bring severe, damaging and extremely destructive gusts in excess of 130km/h.
Potential impacts from a Red Warning include which is place from 06:00 Friday 24/01/2025 to 12:00 Friday 24/01/2025 include:
• Danger to life
• Extremely dangerous travelling conditions
• Unsafe working conditions
• Disruption and cancellations to transport
• Many fallen trees
• Significant and widespread power outages
• Impacts to communications networks
• Cancellation of event
• Structural damage
• Wave overtopping
• Coastal flooding in low-lying and exposed areas
Transport
Public transport will be heavily impacted across the country for the duration of the storm.
The NTA said;
“As the National Transport Authorities and the transport operators get further information we will be in a better position to provide greater clarity on the impact of services around the country.
“Services in the hours before and after the Red warning takes effect are also likely to be severely impacted.We’re urging customers not undertake any travel without checking that services are back operational. Check operator’s website and social media for updates,”
Schools
Schools, childcare facilities, and higher education institutions will close during the red warning with a Department of Education spokesperson saying;
“All schools should keep up to date with the current weather warnings which are carried on all national and local news bulletins and in particular any change in the status warning for their area and keep themselves apprised of any hourly and other updates from Met Éireann, and from their local authorities”
